Autumn Style Inspiration

As the evenings draw out and the weather gets cooler I'm finding myself nesting and retreating indoors. I'm already craving warming soups, hot apple pies and new season goodies. I want our little home to be as cosy as possible inside where there's a fire, toasty socks and the XFactor.

I'm loving tartan right now, and always favour rich red colours which are perfect for the chillier months. By mixing up lots of chunky knits, tweeds and wool I find it adds much needed texture against our white walls. I've picked this Brescia Nut fabric from John Lewis for a pair of curtains for the lounge. (There's no way I can make them myself, so the roll of material is sitting waiting for a proper woman to come and make them).

For the kitchen, I adore this blue and white theme in an otherwise fairly simple country feel setup. We have a little window like this above the sink, so a striped blind could be something fairly straightforward to put together (I'll get back to you on how 'simple' it really was). A deep butler sink with a white jug of wild flowers finishes the look off beautifully. Not typically autumnal, but fresh, clean and welcoming.

The kitchen is the centre of the home, so it's never going to be devoid of lots of stuff. I love this copper coloured chicken wire basket, which is ideal for serving a couple of my own cinnamon buns, or just organising those little bits and pieces you just can't seem to find a home for.

Our bedroom feels a bit cold now. We have a lovely white faux fur throw for our bed which I'll be digging out to keep the frost bite at bay. All of our furniture is white though so I'm feeling the need for colour and a few extra textiles and fabrics to add a bit of warmth (visually at least if not actually). Here I love how tartan, fur and wood are used to create a richer, more rustic and outdoorsy feel to the room. It makes me want to scoot right under the covers with my Kindle.

This blue willow-inspired rug could look great against our plain white furniture. It will need some plain white bedding, but offset with our dark wooden floors, navy cushions and a throw I think it could look really smart.

A bed must be piled high with cushions. The fact that we chuck them all off to actually sleep is beside the point... Adding touches of patterns and colour would bring our white room to life a bit. Plus it's an easy way to give a room a makeover without changing all the furniture or the walls.

Of course some beautiful berries, foliage and flowers can freshen up any room and add a touch of seasonality to your table. I love the idea of bursts of gold and red leaves captured in these jars. It does look like a lot of work though...luckily it looks like these guys have made it super easy!

Now we just need the leaves to drop... how are you getting ready for autumn?
