Orford Saloon Tapas Bar

Orford Road is a great little street at the heart of Walthamstow Village. It's not like London at all, which can be lovely for a lazy weekend in paradise, just at the end of the Victoria line! But shhh... don't say anything, or everyone will want to live here.

The Saloon Tapas Bar is very simple. Small, cramped and packed on a Saturday night. The decor is even simpler - rustic, let's say. Wrought iron chairs, mosaic tables and floor and white washed walls. That's pretty much it. It's typical for Spain actually. Away from the tourist track I mean, and very basic. But the food is always sublime. No frills, handsome portions and always ridiculously cheap. I'll take you next time we go, but for now let's explore this menu.

We ordered way too much food. Pinchitos Morunos - lamb marinated in cumin and garlic, Patatas Alioli - delicious fat chip-like potatoes in garlic mayo (two portions, one with a spicy tomato sauce).

Pulpo a La Gallega - octopus in paprika, Langostinos a La Parnilla -  king prawns swimming in butter, Chorizo, Champinones Al Ajillo - mushrooms in white wine with yep, more garlic and Filete a La Plancha a La Andaluza  - tender pieces of flame grilled beef fillet.

It was just incredible food, and the dishes were served sizzling and bubbling as soon as they were made, so there was a lovely ambling rhythm to the meal. We shared a bottle of wine (only one - it was a Tuesday after all) and the whole bill came to £63. A brilliant bargain for such a feast. Book here if you are going at the weekend - it gets busy. Oh, and wear stretchy pants.
